After 5 years of dating, and wondering if each and every weekend may be THE weekend, Glenn proposed on our anniversary.  On July 4th, 2008, we went to my parents' camp on Crescent Lake in Raymond, Maine.  A handful of my family members were also there to celebrate the 4th.  He and I had lunch with the group, then went out on the boat to enjoy the warmth and sun - and a little time alone.
On the ride to the middle of the lake, he mentioned that we should invite my family out on the boat with us later that night to watch the fireworks with us.  I took that as a huge sign that this would be another weekend of secret disappointment.  He could tell I was upset and made me tell him why.  I didn't want to ruin the whole weekend, so I simply responded "I guess I just had gotten my hopes up."  I was thinking a proposal during the fireworks would quite literally be spectacular.  He had other plans...
We had agreed to only exchange cards for our anniversary, so I made sure my card said it all.  Apparently, he had the same thoughts.  I had recently come across a mix-CD I had made for him when we first started dating, and brought it along for the ride.  We exchanged cards - and each cried at how perfect the other's card was.  When our favorite song came on - If You're Not The One, by Daniel Beddingfield - he began fumbling with the boat seat, saying it felt wobbly.  I didn't think anything of it, and actually started spreading all the bottles of sunblock out in the space between our seats.  He then says "can you move these?" - they were all laid out where he was intending to kneel!  :)
So, I moved the sunblock, and when I turned look back at him and he was on one knee holding a beautiful white ring box.  He had hidden it under the seat for the ride out.  I was so relieved, and surprised, I was speechless.  When he saw my reaction, he lost his train of thought, and neither of us remembers what he said beyond "I know this has taken forever, but..."
In that very instant, it suddenly didn't matter how long it had taken us to get to that point, but only that we were there.  (And the fact that it happened EXACTLY as I wanted was a bonus!)  And, we got to celebrate with family and fireworks that night!

The name my grandfather gave the camp when building it:
